We’ve Been There

We’re rooted in innovation

Portrait of Johnson Controls founder, Warren Johnson

In 1885, most people weren’t concerned with things like pollutants, clean energy, or carbon footprints. Then again, most people were not our founder, Warren Johnson.

Building off the success of his 1883 patent for the first “electric tele-thermoscope,” essentially the first thermostat, Johnson founded our company to explore better ways to harness and conserve precious energy resources. He unleashed a tradition of innovation – and with over 9,000 active patents today, it is this same tradition that continues to inspire thousands of employees and power the success of Johnson Controls.

Our Growth

Growing with purpose

Our passion is to build smarter, healthier, and more sustainable tomorrows. And you can see it in everything we do – with buildings that support and enhance lives all over the world; in the schools where we work for better learning environments; at the hospitals where we transform patient experiences; in the data centers we make more efficient and secure; in the sporting venues and airports where we give people more enjoyable safer experiences; in the places where tomorrow’s groundbreaking and life-saving innovations are being created; and in all the places we make more sustainable for the good of humanity and the planet.
