DUTIES
Determines the sequence of events; that is, plans the work to be done step by step. For example, must decide the type of metal to be used and assure the correctness of the prints being used.
Sets up and operates lathes, grinding and milling machines, and other machine tools such as band saws, drill presses, welding, and heat-treating equipment, which are required to make and shape all plastic and metal parts to precise dimensions and tolerances, usually to .001 and occasionally .0001 of an inch.
Develops through trial and error or by adjusting prints, lays out and constructs special forming, upsetting, and riveting dies, special cams, links, clamps, toggles, catches and other equipment such as jury clamps, used for production and prototype fabrications.
Develops and constructs from prints and/or descriptions special valves, seals, gaskets, and adapters for various test applications, special apparatus, and components.
Because of a backlog of work or machine capabilities in the Model Shop, 3 or 4 times a year will perform model shop duties. Constructs complex working models, prototypes any other special equipment such as hand assembly devices or components for machines, machine tapes, fixtures, dies and molds to precise dimensions.
Sets up, develops and trial runs new press forming dies and re-works die details to acceptable parts.
Maintains and repairs departmental equipment, dies and molds used in production operations such as replacing parts and checking operating precision. Requires replacing such items as ejection and core pins, polishing dies and removing stuck parts in die cavities. Also makes precision measuring gauges for the Quality Control Inspector as well as machine operators.
Occasionally performs gas and electrical welding and brazing on tools and fixtures and silver soldering.
Grinds and sharpens cutting tools.
Using drawing and heat-treating furnaces heat-treats tool steels by checking temperatures and using a Rockwell Tester.
Is periodically called upon to evaluate or repair wear of production machine components and perform spindle alignments on these machines.
Works cooperatively with tool designers, draftspersons and/or engineers to arrive at logical solutions to tool and machine design/function problems.
