Under general direction or engineering guidance, prepares preliminary design proposals and design layouts of new products, redesign or improvements to existing products, and preparation of preliminary B.O.M.'s and drawings using conventional and CAD techniques as well as pro/ENGINEER 3D product design software.
This position provides support to product lines manufactured in Reynosa Mexico. The charter of the department is to resolve manufacturing related field complaints, implement manufacturing cost and quality improvements, execute product discontinuation, qualify and implement alternate components and raw material, conduct Special Field Failure Analysis, write and implement Engineering Change Orders, implement make vs. buy and manufacturing location changes and provide technical recommendation to deploy new products into production. Principal responsibilities of this position include generation of Engineering Changes, Release to Manufacturing (RTM) and Release to Production (RTP) documentation, obtain product team approvals on this documentation and maintain engineering files

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

1. Prepares conceptual sketches of new products which illustrate proposals from design team.
2. Prepares preliminary layouts and part drawings to construct breadboard model.
3. Prepares design layouts or directs the preparation of layouts, to determine the relations between components, tolerances, functional requirements, allocation of space and component geometry.
4. Prepares or directs the preparation of drawings of detail parts, assemblies, bills of material, and specifications from data furnished or developed from layouts, or ideas which conform to established standards and procedures.
5. Makes necessary calculations to establish acceptable standards of performance, selection of materials, hardware, and type of construction.
6. Assures that design features, dimensions, tolerances, and allowances conform to functional and manufacturing requirements.
7. Independently initiates the investigation of design options to reduce cost, improve performance and manufacturability.
8. Checks layouts, sketches, calculations, and formal drawing documentation of those assigned, for accuracy, completeness and standards.
9. May participate in expediting construction of prototypes, analysis of tests, design reviews, liaison with other departments or vendors, preparation of reports, and review of costs estimates, recommendation, and preparation of releases to manufacturing.
10. Revises drawings and prepares change orders, investigates change requests, resolves shop problems, and proposes redesigns to improve performance or reduce costs.
11. Provides work direction or training to less experienced drafters.
12. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate Degree in Mechanical or Electronic Design Technology. Minimum 8 years of drafting experience required including working knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting Techniques. Practical experience using CAD technology relevant to current JCI software as well as pro/Engineering Software. Requires thorough understanding of ANSI standards and geometric tolerancing. Working knowledge of manufacturing methods and processes incuding Designer experience in electronic components and Electro-mechanical devices is highly desirable..

Required

Three (3) or more years of experience as a proven designer.

Desired

Five (5) or more years of experience as a drafter / designer (combined experience) in a design group or an engineering support position is highly desirable.
